Beard of the Week: Nick Mangold

Finally, Nick Mangold has won Beard of the Week. It only took 7 weeks into the NFL season but he’s earned it. The All-Pro Center for the New York Jets has had a rough season, dealing with an ankle injury but Jet fans have also learned just how valuable he is.

After playing college football at The Ohio State University, he was taken in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the Jets took him with the 29th overall pick.

The 27 year old grew up in Kettering, Ohio, the same town that produced NFL players AJ Hawk and Mike Nugent. In addition to football, Mangold also did wrestling and track & field while competing as a kid.

He married his high school sweatheart Jennifer Richmond in 2007.

Mangold’s sister Holley played football as well. She was featured on the MTV show True Life: I’m The Big Girl.

Congratulations to Nick Mangold, our latest Beard of the Week.

RUNNER UP
Lance Berkman

Alright Lance, your Cardinals are down 3-2 and Game 6 is tonight in St. Louis. Can you win the next two at home? I think you can…..

Beard of the Week: Mike Napoli

Born October 31st, 1981 in Hollywood, Florida, Mike Napoli is the starting catcher for the Texas Rangers. Game 1 of the World Series begins tonight and Napoli’s Rangers will be taken on the Cardinals in St. Louis, first pitch scheduled for 8:05 pm. Napoli has also been known to play a mean first base when his team has needed him to.

He was drafted by the Anaheim Angels in the 17th round of the 2000 MLB Draft, exactly 500th overall. He made his major league debut in 2006 with the Angels.

His time in Anaheim was a solid one.

In January 2011, Napoli was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, then shipped to Texas 4 days later.

He had a great season, capping it with a strong performance in the Rangers final game of the regular season, finishing with a .320 batting average, 30 homeruns and 75 runs batted in.

He made a big play in the ALCS, holding on to the ball during Miguel Cabrera’s lazy attempt to knock it out in a game the Rangers eventually won in extra innings.

Congratulations to Mike Napoli on winning Beard of the Week and best of luck in the World Series. Although I think the Cardinals will win in 6 games, it wouldn’t be a shock if Texas wins this thing in 4 or 5 games. Either way, it’s been a great baseball season.

Beard of the Week: Reggie Watts

Born Reginald Lucien Frank Roger Watts in Germany, his date of birth was March 23rd, 1972. Reggie Watts is a Seattle-based popular comedian and musician. His performances are usually improvised, while he plays written music. His family moved to Spain and then Great Falls, Montana, where he graduated from Great Falls High School.

Watts moved to Seattle at age 18 and studied Jazz at Cornish College of the Arts. After that he would play in a variety of different local bands, with many different people and many different genres of music. Some of the groups were: Hit Explosion, Swampdweller, Action Buddy, Chiarrscuro, Clementine, Smell No Taste, Wayne Horvitz, 4+1 Ensemble, Das Rut, Synthclub, Elemental, Eyvand Kang Seven Nades, Free Space among others….

The next big move was moving to the Lower East Side in New York City in 2004 to concentrate on comedy. He made a web short that went viral shortly after. In 2006, he moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and to help him branch out performing for film and television.

Congrats to our newest winner Reggie Watts. Chances are you’ve seen him on television and chances are even better you’ll see him again in the future. He’s got a bright future, a full head of hair and a great beard. A Beard of the Week.

Beard of the Week: Jeff Saturday

Born June 18th, 1975, Jeff Saturday has been a center for the Indianapolis Colts since 1999, earning the starting spot for good in 2000. He was undrafted out of North Carolina but has gone on to have an excellent career hiking the football to Peyton Manning.

Saturday is also on the Executive Committee of the NFL Players Association, we saw him talking to the media a lot over the summer during the lockout. He attended Shamrock High School (quite a cool name for a school) in Georgia before winning multiple conference awards at UNC.

Other football accolades include 5 Pro Bowl selections, 4 fumble recoveries, helping the Colts beat the Bears in the Super Bowl in 2007, and being named the 59th best player in the NFL in a 2011 poll. He also has his own action figure.

While the Colts are currently 0-4 and going through a very tough season to say the least, Saturday continues to show what it means to be a professional, and has remained classy throughout his team’s struggles. Congratulations on winning Beard of the Week Jeff, it may be your only victory in the near future….One last interesting fact: Jeff attempted a pass in 2004 but it unfortunately fell imcomplete. (His career passer rating is 39.6)

One of the best parts of an Apple product launch is the fews week leading up to it. A Chinese manufacturer accidentally lets it known that the dimensions of the purported device are “X.” A few days later, a board leader leaks there are going to be new phones. (Did he say phones, plural?!)…

Beard of the Week: Tariq Trotter

Better known as “Black Thought”, Trotter will be turning 40 on October 3rd. He is the lead MC of The Roots, which he co-founded in 1987 with Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, a former Beard of the Week winner himself.

When they first started off, Trotter and Thompson began a MC/Drummer duo that would perform on the streets of Philadelphia. They then teamed up with other MC Malik B. The debut album came out in 1993 and was titled Organix.

1995, they released their second album, Do You Want More?!!!??!.

In addition to all his success with The Roots and the 12 studio albums they’ve released(!) so far, Trotter has appeared as a featured artist on numerous other tracks with a bunch of notable names. Other artist(s) include: Pete Rock, Damian Marley, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Chiddy Bang, Wale, Big Pun, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon.

Trotter is most appreciated for his lyrical style, both the awareness it preaches and his ability to never miss a beat, even while performing live in front of thousands of fans. Let’s hope that doesn’t change anytime soon because The Roots are about as cool as any group can get. Need proof? They’ve won two Beard of the Week’s already. “Nuff said.

Congratulations to Tariq Trotter, stay tuned next Wednesday for an all new Beard of the Week!
